Artistic and research project “Lemkos: a self-portrait” — a representative group of Lemkos from before the Vistula Operation and contemporary times.
Lemkos, as a genetically homogeneous ethnic group, were of particular interest to ethnographers and anthropologists, as well as Nazi scientists. The archival photographs, presented in the planned publication, come from the archive of the Łopaciński Family. They were taken in the village of Wysowa in the Low Beskids before 1947. The Lemkos posed for photographs with an awareness of their distinctiveness — and perhaps — sensing their future fate. Contemporary photographs of Lemkos, taken by us during the edition of the Lemko Watra in Zdynia, will be added to the archival selection.
